Junior Naturalist Day
Give your class the opportunity to explore the lakeshore, woodlands and animal life that surrounds Camp Blodgett as a junior naturalist. Your class will learn about the ecology of Lake Michigan and its surrounding dunes and wetlands and observe a variety of birds and other wildlife in our woodlands. Share your desired NGSS content standards with us and we will create a hands-on experience your kids will love!

Marsh study (minimum 2 hours)
- When we look at a pond or marsh, what we see on the surface can be misleading. We will hike to a local marsh, collect samples of the water and try to identify any organisms we find. We will also look around the marsh for insects, birds or mammals. **Students might get their feet wet or muddy and will absolutely get dirty hands during this activity!
Beach Walk (1 hour minimum)
- The Great Lakes are one of the United States most valuable natural resources, providing 20% of the world’s fresh water. Take a walk with us along the shore of Lake Michigan and try to answer our lake trivia.
Bird Identification (1 hour minimum)
- This activity begins with a discussion on what to look for when birding, and an overview of the different parts of a bird that help with identification. Then we will hike into the woods to our sheltered birding area to see what we can find!
Nature Crafts (1 hour minimum)
- Use the natural world around you as inspiration for your art. Use leaves, rocks, twigs and more to decorate sun paper or other crafts designed to unleash your inner artist!
Nature Games (1 hour minimum)
- Leaf relay, camouflage and more! These games are designed to use natural items as part of the fun! This is a great way to round out the day and get out some energy before getting back on the bus!
